Who should buy Gas Engineer Software, and who should not?

Our verdict

GES is one of the best-value picks for sole gas engineers and small heating firms (1 to 5 engineers) who want certificates and job management in one app. Certificates are on every plan from £18 per user per month ex VAT (annual), there is no contract, and the iPhone app scores 4.7 from 1.5k ratings. Choose something else if you work across many trades (Powered Now or Tradify cover more), if you have six or more staff and need deeper office tools (Commusoft), or if you only want a CP12 app and nothing else (Gas Certificate App is a simpler option). Our gas certificate app comparison covers all of these.

What does Gas Engineer Software do well?

Certificates on the cheapest plan

Many general trade apps keep certificates for a higher tier. Tradify puts them on Pro (£37 per user) and Powered Now on Professional (£32 per user ex VAT). GES includes records and certificates on Starter, from £18 per user per month ex VAT on an annual plan.

Built around gas work

Gas rate calculations, pipe sizing and other tools work offline and feed straight into the certificate. Boiler manuals come with an "AI Assist" search. Customer, property and appliance history sits in one record, so next year's service is quick to book.

Service reminders that bring work back

Automated service reminders can turn into booked jobs, and payment reminders chase late payers. GES gives an example of 120 reminders, a 33% conversion and £78 a booking producing £3,089 a year in extra revenue. That is the vendor's own illustration, but the logic holds: repeat annual services are the easiest work a gas engineer can win.

Well-rated engineer app

The UK App Store showed 4.7 from 1.5k ratings when we checked, a large sample for a niche trade app.

No contract, no setup fee

Billing is month to month and you keep access to the end of the period if you cancel.

Where does Gas Engineer Software fall short?

  • Confusing Core price. The FAQ says £23 per user, but the price calculator shows £25 per user (4 users for £100). Confirm the figure before you subscribe.
  • Accounting links only on Pro. Xero, QuickBooks and Sage need the £30 plan.
  • Gas and heating focus. If you also do electrical work and EICRs, a general trade app like Tradify or Powered Now fits better.
  • Thin independent reviews outside the App Store. Trustpilot UK showed 4.5 from just 14 reviews, and Capterra UK had no user reviews when we checked.
  • Some forms not named. The pricing page lists the main records, but warning notices and commissioning checklists were not named there. GES says it covers "every UK gas and oil certificate", so ask for the full list in your trial.
  • App Store pricing differs. The App Store lists an in-app "Single Engineer, 12 Months Subscription" at £19.00, which does not match the web pricing. Check what you are buying before paying through Apple.

Gas Engineer Software features in detail

Gas safety records

GES produces the landlord gas safety record (often called a CP12), boiler service records and gas tightness test records, with your logo on each one. Certificates are emailed to customers from the app. HSE says landlords must arrange an annual gas safety check, can have it done up to 2 months early while keeping the same due date, and must keep records for at least 2 years. HSE also accepts digital records if they can be printed, are secure and identify the engineer. Our landlord gas safety certificate guide sets out the full rules.

Oil and heat pump certificates

Oil records and certificates, and heat pump certificates, are listed. That helps engineers who are adding heat pump work as boiler installs slow down.

Service reminders

Reminders go out automatically before the next service or landlord check is due, and replies can become booked jobs. The full service history per property and appliance means you can see what was fitted and when.

Job management

From Core, you get scheduling, quotes, invoices and automated reminders. Team scheduling with permissions, custom job statuses and QR-code payments on invoices are also listed. GES's homepage lists Making Tax Digital support. If MTD matters to you, check that GES appears on HMRC's list of compatible software before you rely on it.

Apps and offline use

Engineers use the mobile app on iPhone, iPad (iOS 15 or later) or Android. Calculators and tools work offline. The office uses a web portal.

All 14 Trustpilot reviews were 5-star, praising ease of use, less paperwork, the all-in-one set-up and helpful support. Trustpilot noted that GES had not recently invited customers to review, so treat that small sample with care. The App Store score from 1.5k ratings is the more reliable signal.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Gas Engineer Software cost per month?

GES lists three plans, all ex VAT and per user. Starter is £18 a month on an annual plan or £19 monthly, Core is £23 in the FAQ but £25 in the price calculator, and Pro is £30. There are no setup fees and no contracts. The 14-day free trial needs no card details.

Is Gas Engineer Software worth it?

For a sole gas engineer or a small heating firm, yes. Starter gives you CP12s, service records and job management for £18 a month ex VAT on an annual plan, which is less than general trade apps charge for certificates. Choose Pro if you need Xero, QuickBooks or Sage, and look at Commusoft once you pass six or more staff.

Can I do a CP12 on Gas Engineer Software?

Yes. GES produces landlord gas safety records (CP12), boiler service records, gas tightness test records, oil certificates and heat pump certificates, and says it covers every UK gas and oil certificate. Landlords must have an annual gas safety check, and HSE allows digital records if they can be printed and identify the engineer.

Does Gas Engineer Software work with Xero?

Yes, but only on the Pro plan. GES says Pro includes direct integrations with QuickBooks, Xero and Sage. Starter and Core do not list accounting integrations, so a firm that wants invoices to flow into its books should budget £30 per user per month ex VAT.

Does Gas Engineer Software send service reminders?

Yes. GES sends automated service reminders that can turn into booked jobs, and automated payment reminders for late payers. It also keeps a full service history for each property and appliance, which makes next year's annual service or landlord check quicker to book.

Gas Engineer Software vs Powered Now: which is better?

GES is cheaper and focused on gas and heating, from £18 per user per month ex VAT with certificates on every plan. Powered Now costs £32 per user ex VAT for certificates on Professional, but covers nearly 100 trade forms across many trades, is HMRC-recognised for Making Tax Digital and has Windows and Mac apps. Pick GES for a pure gas business.
