Bark review for tradespeople

Quick answer

Bark can win trade work, but it is the riskiest of the big lead platforms. You buy credits (£1.80 each at list price) and spend them to contact a customer, whether or not they reply. Credits expire after 3 months and unused ones are not refunded. Trustpilot: 3.8 from 112,024 reviews (checked 12 Oct 2026).

Bark is an online marketplace that matches customers with all kinds of service providers, from plumbers to photographers. For tradespeople it works on credits, and the way credits are spent is what makes or breaks it. We checked Bark's help centre, pricing page and Trustpilot on 12 October 2026.

Is Bark worth it for tradespeople? Our verdict in brief

Our verdict

Bark is worth a small, controlled test, not a big credit pack. You pay to contact the customer, not when the customer picks you, so a low reply rate eats money fast. Try it if you do domestic work such as cleaning, gardening or handyman jobs, or want extra leads in a quiet month. Skip it if you want certainty: MyBuilder only charges when a customer shortlists you, which shifts more of the risk off you.

How does Bark work for tradespeople?

  1. Sign up free. You create a profile, pick your services and set where you work. Receiving leads is free.
  2. Browse leads. Each lead shows the customer's request and its cost in credits before you respond.
  3. Buy credits. Credits come in packs; the more you buy, the lower the price per credit.
  4. Respond. Spending the credits unlocks the customer's details and lets you contact them. Bark calls this a one-off fee per lead; follow-up messages are free.
  5. Win (or not). Other professionals can respond to the same request, so speed and a clear message matter. Bark shows a "1st to respond" signal on some leads.

Bark's pricing page says there is "no commission, no hidden fees". That is true: Bark does not take a cut of the job. But you pay for the chance to pitch, not for a result.

What a trade lead typically costs

Bark does not publish credits per lead for each trade. Whito, a UK trade costs site, reported these ranges on 28 July 2026 (based on third-party reports, with prices plus VAT):

  • Small jobs such as cleaning and repairs: 5 to 8 credits (£7 to £14 + VAT).
  • Mid-size jobs such as plumbing and electrical: 8 to 15 credits (£14 to £22 + VAT).
  • Large jobs such as rewires and extensions: 15 to 20+ credits (£22 to £40+ + VAT).

Whito's pound figures do not all match Bark's £1.80 list price (5 credits at £1.80 is £9, and 20 credits is £36), probably because pack prices vary. Work out your own cost as credits per lead times what you actually pay per credit.

Whito also reported that around five professionals can respond to a lead, sometimes more. Bark's own help article does not state a maximum, so treat that as unconfirmed.

Worked example: cost per won job

A plumber responds to 20 leads in a month at 10 credits each, buying at the £1.80 list price.

  • Credits used: 20 × 10 = 200 credits.
  • Cost: 200 × £1.80 = £360.
  • If 2 customers hire you: £180 per won job.
  • If 4 hire you: £90 per won job.

Compare that with your average profit per job. If a typical job leaves you £150 profit, two wins a month means you are losing money on Bark; four wins means you are making a modest return. Track replies as well as wins: if fewer than half your contacted customers ever reply, tighten which leads you respond to.

Watch the three-month expiry. Bark's help centre says credits bought from 1 November 2025 expire three months after purchase, and unused credits are not refunded. A large pack bought to save on the per-credit price can cost more overall if you do not use it in time.

How to spend Bark credits wisely

  • Start small. Buy the smallest pack that makes sense and test for a month before committing to a subscription. Subscriptions run for up to 12 months and renew automatically unless you cancel, and Bark says cancelling in the first three months may stop you getting a subscription again.
  • Filter hard. Skip leads with thin descriptions, unrealistic budgets or locations outside your normal area.
  • Respond early. Bark flags leads where you would be first to respond, and being first gives you the best chance of a reply.
  • Claim returns within 14 days. If a lead is clearly not genuine, use the online Credit Return Request Form straight away. Bark aims to respond within 48 hours.
  • Keep a simple log. Record credits spent, replies and wins per lead. After a month you will know your real cost per job.

Is Bark good for new businesses?

It can be, because the Starter Pack comes with a one-time Get Hired Guarantee that returns your credits if you are not hired. That lowers the risk of a first test. After that, you carry the full risk of every lead you respond to, so only keep going if your log shows a cost per job you are happy with.

Bark pros and cons

Pros

  • Free to join, and you see the credit cost of every lead before you spend.
  • No commission on jobs you win.
  • No contract for one-off credit packs.
  • Wide range of service categories, useful for domestic and mixed services.
  • New businesses get a one-time Get Hired Guarantee with the Starter Pack.

Cons

  • You pay to respond, whether the customer replies or not.
  • Credits expire after three months and are not refundable if unused.
  • Returns for bad leads are discretionary and must be claimed within 14 days.
  • Credit cost per lead is not published by trade, so budgeting is guesswork at first.
  • Lowest Trustpilot score of the three big platforms, with frequent lead-quality complaints.

What do professionals say about Bark?

  • Trustpilot (Bark): 3.8 out of 5 from 112,024 reviews, checked 12 Oct 2026, with 7,018 in the previous 12 months. The split was 67% five-star and 8% one-star. Bark replies to 99% of negative reviews, according to Trustpilot.
  • Lead quality: several professional reviewers describe leads that never answer calls. One reviewer on an elite membership estimated around 90% of leads were poor quality.
  • Cost: one elite member said they spend roughly £200 to £300 per booked job; another said a monthly subscription of about £200 now buys far fewer enquiries than before.
  • Refunds: reviewers describe credit return requests for unresponsive leads being refused, with Bark's replies directing them to its review team.

These are individual reviews, not a survey, and many five-star reviews come from customers. But the professional complaints are consistent, and they line up with how the model works: you carry the risk of a customer who never replies.

Make every paid lead count

On Bark, the first good reply often wins. Keep your quote templates ready, log every lead you pay for and chase the ones that go quiet. A simple trade CRM or job management app makes that a two-minute job. Compare them in our guide to CRM for trades.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Bark cost for professionals?

Signing up and receiving leads is free. You pay to respond to a lead using credits. Bark's help centre gives a current price of £1.80 per credit, with cheaper rates in bigger packs, and says each lead's credit cost depends on the service, job size, location and how ready the customer is to hire. The cost is shown on the lead before you respond.

Is Bark legit or a scam?

Bark is a genuine marketplace, and many customers rate it well. The complaints from professionals are about value: leads that never answer, credits spent on poor-quality enquiries and refunds being refused. It is legitimate, but you can lose money quickly if you respond to every lead without filtering.

Can you get a refund on Bark credits?

Unused credits cannot be refunded. Bark's Credit Return Policy lets you ask for credits back on a lead that does not meet its quality standards, through an online form within 14 days of buying the lead. All returns are at Bark's discretion. New businesses buying the Starter Pack also get a one-time Get Hired Guarantee.

Do Bark credits expire?

Yes. Bark's help centre says credits bought from 1 November 2025 expire three months after purchase. Credits bought before then lasted 12 months. Only buy what you expect to use within three months, because unused credits are not refunded.

What is the Bark Get Hired Guarantee?

It comes with the Starter Pack for new businesses, which Bark says holds enough credits to contact roughly 10 customers. If you do not get hired, Bark says it will return your credits on a one-time basis. Read the conditions in your account before relying on it.

Is Bark better than Checkatrade or MyBuilder for trades?

For core building trades, usually not. MyBuilder charges only when a customer shortlists you, and Checkatrade has the stronger homeowner brand. Bark is worth testing for services where it has more demand, such as cleaning, gardening and handyman work, and for trades in areas where the other two platforms are crowded.
