MyBuilder review for tradespeople
Quick answer
MyBuilder is a fair, low-risk way for UK tradespeople to find work: joining is free, expressing interest is free, and you pay a shortlist fee (shown before you act, excluding VAT) only when a customer shares their details. Fees are non-refundable and a shortlist is not a job. Trustpilot: 4.3 from 56,537 reviews (checked 12 Oct 2026).
On this page
MyBuilder lets homeowners post a job for free and lets tradespeople pay only when a customer shortlists them. We read MyBuilder's tradesperson terms (updated 4 March 2026), its sign-up pages and its Trustpilot reviews on 12 October 2026.
Is MyBuilder worth it? Our verdict in brief
Our verdict
MyBuilder is the lowest-commitment lead platform of the big three. Pick it if you are new, part time, or want to test demand in a new area without a monthly fee or contract. Be selective: you pay every time you are shortlisted, win or lose, and refunds come only as account credit. Established trades wanting a steady weekly flow may get more from Checkatrade, at the cost of a 12-month contract.
How does MyBuilder work for tradespeople?
- Sign up for free. You create a free profile and choose your trades and working area. MyBuilder asks for card details when you register.
- Get job alerts. When a homeowner posts a job, MyBuilder's matching system alerts relevant tradespeople.
- Express interest. You send a short message to the homeowner. The shortlist fee for that lead is shown before you do this.
- Get shortlisted. If the homeowner shortlists you, contact details are exchanged and the shortlist fee becomes payable.
- Quote and win (or not). You arrange a visit or quote directly. If you win the job, the homeowner can leave a review on your profile.
The key point: you are paying for an introduction, not a job. Several tradespeople can express interest in the same job, so your message, speed and reviews decide whether you get shortlisted and then hired.
MyBuilder also offers an optional sponsored placement for an extra monthly fee, under separate terms. Clause 6.2 of the tradesperson terms mentions it, but no price is published.
How much does MyBuilder cost? (sourced)
| Item | Cost or rule | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Joining | Free ("Sign up for free") | MyBuilder trade sign-up page |
| Membership or subscription | None in the terms (optional sponsored placement costs extra, price not published) | Terms, clause 6.2 |
| Expressing interest | Free | Archived MyBuilder FAQ (Oct 2023) |
| Shortlist fee | Set per lead by likely size, value and location of the job. Shown before you act, excluding VAT | Terms, clause 10.2 |
| Typical shortlist fee range | £3.50 to £45.00 (2023 figure, not current) | Archived MyBuilder FAQ (Oct 2023) |
| Reported range today | "Often around £10 to £50 depending on the job" (third-party estimate) | Whito (Jun 2026) |
| Refunds | Non-refundable, except at MyBuilder's discretion, as account credit only. Credit expires after 12 months | Terms, clauses 10.2, 12.9, 13.3 |
| Late payment | Interest at 4% above Bank of England base rate; possible suspension after 15 days overdue | Terms, clause 12.5 |
| Failed payment | £20 + VAT admin fee | Terms, clause 14.2 |
| Minimum term | None. You can stop any time once invoices are paid | Terms, clause 17.8 |
MyBuilder no longer publishes a current fee range on its public pages, so the 2023 range is the last figure it published itself. Check the fee shown on each lead before you express interest.
Worked example: what does a won job really cost?
Say you are an electrician and the leads you go for carry a £20 shortlist fee (ex VAT). In a month you are shortlisted 10 times and win 3 jobs.
- Shortlist fees: 10 × £20 = £200 + VAT (£240 including VAT at 20%).
- Cost per won job: £200 ÷ 3 = £66.67 before VAT.
- If each job leaves £250 profit, the 3 wins make £750, so you are £550 ahead after fees.
Now drop the win rate to 1 in 10. The same £200 buys one job, and that £250 profit shrinks to £50. Your win rate after shortlisting is the number to watch. If you are VAT registered you can normally reclaim the VAT on the fees; if not, the VAT is a real cost.
How invoices are paid
Under clause 12.3, MyBuilder only accepts invoice payment online by credit or debit card, takes card details at sign-up and may collect payment automatically. Invoices are issued at least weekly and are due on the invoice date. Keep an eye on them in your accounts, because they arrive in small, frequent amounts that are easy to lose track of.
How to keep your MyBuilder costs down
- Read every lead properly before you express interest. Vague descriptions, no photos and jobs far outside your area cost the same fee and win less often.
- Set a weekly fee budget. Decide how many shortlists you can afford each week and stop when you hit it.
- Call within the hour. Once shortlisted, a fast call is the best way to turn a paid introduction into a site visit.
- Log problems at once. If a number is dead or you are shortlisted twice for the same job, report it straight away. MyBuilder's 2023 help page named these as cases where it would refund, and any credit now comes as account credit.
- Track your win rate. Divide jobs won by shortlists paid each month. If it falls below one in five, change the jobs you go for or the way you reply.
Is MyBuilder good for new tradespeople?
Yes, more than the other big platforms. There is no monthly fee and no contract, so you can switch it off in a quiet month or when your diary is full. The catch is reviews: homeowners compare profiles, so a new account with no reviews will win fewer shortlists at first. Ask your existing customers to leave a review on your MyBuilder profile once a job is done.

What do tradespeople say about MyBuilder?
- Trustpilot (MyBuilder): 4.3 out of 5 from 56,537 reviews, checked 12 Oct 2026, with 2,163 reviews in the previous 12 months. The split was 82% five-star and 5% one-star. Most reviews are from homeowners.
- Tradesperson complaints on Trustpilot: the one-star reviews from trades repeat the same themes: being charged for leads where the customer never answered, disputes over shortlist fees without a credit, slow refund replies and doubts about whether some leads were genuine.
- MyBuilder's response: its replies say it charges a fee each time a tradesperson is shortlisted and details are exchanged, that it cannot guarantee every shortlist becomes a job, and that credits may be considered in certain circumstances.
Our reading: homeowners rate MyBuilder well, and trades who complain are mostly paying for shortlists that went nowhere. Choose leads carefully and log dead numbers straight away.

Frequently asked questions
How much does MyBuilder cost for tradesmen?
There is no membership fee. You pay a shortlist fee when a customer shortlists you and your contact details are exchanged. MyBuilder's terms (updated 4 March 2026) say each fee depends on the likely size, value and location of the job and is shown, excluding VAT, before you express interest. An archived MyBuilder help page from October 2023 gave a typical range of £3.50 to £45.00.
Do you pay MyBuilder if you do not get the job?
Yes. Under clause 10.1 of the tradesperson terms, the shortlist fee is due once the customer's contact details are shared, even if you are not awarded the job. MyBuilder states it does not guarantee work. Refunds are at its discretion and are given only as account credit.
Is MyBuilder better than Checkatrade?
For newer businesses, often yes, because there is no monthly fee or 12-month contract. You only pay when a customer picks you. Checkatrade can deliver a steadier flow of leads for established trades with strong reviews, but its lead plans are quoted privately and auto-renew.
Can I get a refund on a MyBuilder shortlist fee?
Shortlist fees are non-refundable under the terms, except at MyBuilder's discretion under its policies, and any refund comes as account credit, not cash. Account credit expires 12 months after it is issued. MyBuilder's replies on Trustpilot say credits may be considered in certain circumstances, so raise genuine problems such as a dead phone number quickly.
How do I pay MyBuilder invoices?
By credit or debit card online. MyBuilder takes card details when you sign up and may collect payment automatically on each due date. Invoices are issued at least weekly and are due on the invoice date. A failed payment can trigger a £20 plus VAT admin fee, and accounts overdue by 15 days may be suspended.
How do I win more jobs on MyBuilder?
Reply fast with a short, specific message that answers the customer's job description, keep your profile photos current, and ask every happy customer for a review. Only express interest in jobs you can genuinely do soon and in your area, because each shortlist costs money whether you win or not.
