MCS certification for installers: steps and costs
Quick answer
MCS certification lets UK heat pump, solar, battery, biomass and wind installers offer work that qualifies for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (up to £7,500, or £9,000 off the gas grid) and export payments. MCS estimates first-year costs at about £1,090 plus £30 per installation certificate, then about £890 a year.

For a UK heat pump or solar installer, MCS certification is the key that unlocks government grants for your customers. This guide covers the steps, the real costs from MCS's own figures, and how it ties to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, all checked on 12 October 2026.
What is MCS, and why does it matter?
MCS describes itself as the UK's quality mark for small-scale renewable energy. It sets standards for how heat pumps, solar panels, battery storage, biomass and small wind systems are designed and installed, and it provides consumer protection.
MCS is not a legal licence to install. But most domestic customers need an MCS installer to get money back:
| Scheme | What the customer gets | Where | MCS needed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) | £7,500 for air-to-water, ground or water source heat pumps; £9,000 for air-to-water or ground source in eligible off-gas grid homes (until 31 March 2027); £5,000 for biomass boilers; £2,500 for air-to-air heat pumps (homes only) | England and Wales | Yes, the installer must be MCS certified |
| Home Energy Scotland grant and loan | Grant up to £7,500 for heat pumps, plus an optional interest-free loan up to £7,500; extra £1,500 rural uplift for eligible homes | Scotland | Yes, MCS installer and MCS certified products |
| Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) | Payments from an energy supplier for electricity exported to the grid | Great Britain | Yes, per MCS: MCS installer and certified products |
Who applies for BUS? Ofgem says the installer applies for and redeems the voucher on the property owner's behalf. So the grant money flows through your business, and your quote can show the price after the grant. No MCS certificate means no voucher.
Who needs MCS certification?
- Heat pump installers who want to offer BUS or Home Energy Scotland funded jobs. That now includes air-to-air heat pumps, which MCS is bringing into the scheme and which BUS funds at £2,500.
- Solar PV and battery installers whose customers want SEG export payments.
- Biomass and small wind installers.
- Gas engineers moving into heat pumps. Expect to need F-gas too if you will work on the refrigerant circuit. Our F-gas certificate guide explains the categories and costs.
MCS certifies the business, per technology. If you want heat pumps and solar, budget for two technologies with your certification body.
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
BUS is open in England and Wales. Scotland uses the Home Energy Scotland scheme, which also requires MCS. Ofgem's BUS page does not cover Northern Ireland, and the SEG covers Great Britain only, so check local schemes before promising a Northern Irish customer any grant.
How do you become MCS certified, step by step?
These are the five steps from MCS's own guide, with what each means in practice.
- Learn the standards. Read MCS 001 (the installer scheme requirements) and the technical installation standard for each technology you want to offer.
- Show technical competence. Name at least one Nominated Technical Person (NTP) for each technology. MCS recommends an MCS approved training course under its MCS 025 standard.
- Set up a quality management system (QMS). This is your written way of working: how you survey, design, install, commission, hand over and deal with complaints. MCS says it should suit your size, does not need to be long and does not need paid software.
- Join a consumer code. Choose RECC or HIES, both approved by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute. Compare cost and onboarding time.
- Apply to a certification body. It assesses your company processes and inspects a site you nominate. Pick one that covers your technologies. Prices and timescales vary.
How do you choose a certification body?
MCS lists the approved certification bodies and suggests choosing on three things: the services each one offers, whether it covers all the technologies you want, and any relationship you already have (for example, if you already hold another scheme membership with them). Prices and assessment timescales vary, so get at least two quotes and ask each one:
- What is the fee per technology in year one and at renewal?
- How soon can you assess us and inspect a site?
- Which version of the MCS requirements will we be assessed against?
- What happens if we fail part of the assessment?
RECC or HIES?
Both consumer codes are approved by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, and MCS accepts either. MCS's example costs show a £100 joining fee plus £285 a year for a business with 1 to 6 employees, and notes HIES fees are advertised at £695 plus VAT. Compare what each includes and how long onboarding takes, because you cannot finish MCS certification until you are a member.
After that, each completed installation is registered with an MCS installation certificate, which the customer needs for grants and export payments.
Scheme changes in 2026. MCS's homepage says it is redeveloping its installer scheme to raise standards and improve consumer protection, with transition guidance and a list of approved financial protection products. If you are applying now, ask your certification body which version of the requirements you will be assessed against.
How much does MCS certification cost?
MCS publishes example costs for a small business. These are averages, not fixed prices.
| Item | Year 1 | Each year after |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer code (example: 1 to 6 employees) | £100 joining fee plus £285 membership | £285 |
| Certification body, per technology | £650 average | £550 average |
| MCS fee, per company | £55 | £55 |
| MCS installation certificate | £30 per installation | £30 per installation |
| Total | £1,090 plus certificates | £890 plus certificates |
MCS also notes that HIES fees are advertised at £695 plus VAT, so your consumer code choice can change the total. Training for your NTP is extra and varies by course provider.
Deadlines that matter
- 31 March 2027: the £9,000 BUS rate for off-gas grid air-to-water and ground source heat pumps is available until this date, per Ofgem.
- Annual renewals: your consumer code, certification body and MCS fees recur every year.
Worked example: is MCS worth it for a small heat pump firm?
A three-person heating firm in England wants to add air source heat pumps. It plans 20 installs in its first year, all with BUS grants at £7,500.
| Line | Working | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 fixed costs (one technology) | MCS estimate | £1,090 |
| Installation certificates | 20 x £30 | £600 |
| Year 1 MCS cost | £1,690 | |
| Cost per install | £1,690 / 20 | £84.50 |
| Grant funding handled for customers | 20 x £7,500 | £150,000 |
| Year 2 cost at the same volume | £890 + £600 | £1,490 |
Now a sole trader solar installer doing 10 domestic jobs a year. Year one is £1,090 plus 10 x £30 = £1,390, or £139 per install. In year two it is £890 + £300 = £1,190. Without MCS, those customers cannot get SEG export payments, which MCS says require an MCS installer and certified products. For a solar customer, that is a strong reason to pick you over an uncertified rival.
Adding solar PV as a second technology adds roughly another £650 in year one for the certification body (MCS average), plus £30 per solar install. Training costs come on top. The point: the certification itself is small next to the grant value your customers lose without it. The real cost is the time to set up your QMS and keep records good enough to pass the site inspection.
What mistakes do installers make with MCS?
- Quoting before you are certified. No MCS, no BUS voucher. Do not promise a grant until your certificate is in place.
- Buying a costly QMS you do not need. MCS says a QMS should match your size and does not need paid software.
- Forgetting the per-install fee in your pricing. £30 per installation is small, but it belongs in the quote.
- Only one NTP. MCS needs at least one NTP per technology. If that person leaves, you may no longer meet the requirement. Train a second where you can.
- Ignoring F-gas. Heat pump work that opens the refrigerant circuit needs F-gas certification as well.
- Promising BUS in Scotland or Northern Ireland. BUS is England and Wales only.
- Weak paperwork. Your certification body inspects a site you nominate and assesses your processes, so keep surveys, designs, commissioning records and handover packs with each job.
What software helps MCS installers?
MCS installers live on paperwork: survey, design, quote showing the grant, BUS application, commissioning record, MCS certificate and handover. Job management software keeps it all on the job, so your QMS evidence is always in one place.
| Tool | Price | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Commusoft | Quote only, ex VAT, 12-month contract | Built for heating and renewables firms with 6 or more staff; service contracts and asset maintenance |
| Joblogic | From £45 per user per month, billed annually | Planned maintenance and compliance for larger contractors |
| Gas Engineer Software | From £18 per month (annual), ex VAT | Gas and oil certificates plus heat pump certificates for small firms |
| Gas Certificate App | £20 per user per month, ex VAT | Includes a heat pump commissioning form alongside gas forms |

Frequently asked questions
How much does MCS certification cost?
MCS's own guide estimates about £1,090 in year one: a consumer code (for example a £100 joining fee plus £285 for 1 to 6 employees), an average of £650 per technology for the certification body, and £55 for MCS. Each installation certificate is £30 on top. Ongoing years average about £890 plus certificates.
How long does it take to get MCS certified?
MCS does not publish a single timescale. It depends on how fast you complete training for your Nominated Technical Person, set up your quality management system, join a consumer code, and how quickly your chosen certification body can assess your business and inspect a site. MCS says assessment timescales vary between certification bodies.
Do I need MCS to install heat pumps?
Not to install one legally, but in practice yes for most domestic work. Ofgem says only MCS certified installers can apply for Boiler Upgrade Scheme grants, and Home Energy Scotland grants also need an MCS certified installer and products. Without MCS, your customers lose access to grants worth thousands of pounds.
What is a Nominated Technical Person for MCS?
A Nominated Technical Person (NTP) is the person in your business who shows technical competence for a technology. MCS asks for at least one NTP per technology you want certified, ideally trained on an MCS approved course under its MCS 025 standard. One person can be the NTP for more than one technology if qualified.
Which consumer code do MCS installers join?
MCS installers must join a consumer code approved by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute. The two options are RECC and HIES. MCS suggests comparing their costs and onboarding times. MCS's example costs show a £100 joining fee plus £285 a year for 1 to 6 employees, and HIES fees are advertised at £695 plus VAT.
Does MCS apply in Scotland and Northern Ireland?
MCS is a UK-wide quality mark, but the grants differ. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is open in England and Wales only. Scotland has the Home Energy Scotland grant and loan, which also requires an MCS certified installer. The Smart Export Guarantee covers Great Britain, and MCS says it needs an MCS installer and certified products.
